FIRTREE at 50

On Tuesday the 11th October, we have a celebratory meeting in the company of The Right Worshipful the Mayor of Reading, Councillor Rachel Eden. Rachel is no stranger to Firtree, as she was responsible for older people’s work for some time in the past and came to several meetings in that role. We may even have a cake for her to cut!

We still have a few weeks of holiday before we resume our meetings at the Grange on Tuesday mornings and at St Matthew’s on Wednesdays for movement to music, plus of course the Garden Circle meetings.

Speaking of which, 16 members of the Garden Circle had a lovely visit to Toad Hall on Monday 8th August. Their next planned trip is to Caversham Court on Monday 12th September, meeting there at 2.00pm.

Tuesday meetings are as follows:-

6th September         Social gathering

13th September       Terry Giles will talk about the history of Huntley and Palmers

20th September       Social gathering

27th September       Mark’s Summer Quiz

4th October             Social gathering

11th October            Firtree is 50!  Welcome to Rachel Eden the Mayor of Reading

18th October            Social gathering

25th October            Birthday party sing-song with Bert

1st November          Social gathering

Meanwhile, please do take care in this very hot weather. Tempting though it may be to have a beautiful all-over tan, the risks of over-heating are very high, so keep in the shade as much as possible. It is highly unlikely that any of us would qualify for the next edition of Love Island.

Be prepared for the Older People’s Day on Friday 30th September at the Butts Centre (Broad Street Mall). Firtree will feature in the morning programme so a good attendance will be welcome. I will be making a presentation about Firtree. There are public meetings for older people four times a year. They are held at the Council Chamber in Bridge Street from 2.00 – 4.00 and the next one is on the 14th October. It’s very informal, Bridget and I usually attend but it is open to everyone of a certain age.

A date for your diary: We have booked the Southcote Beefeater for a meal at 12.30 on Tuesday 29th November. The number attending is strictly limited to 40.
